The Artist’s Proof - E.A. / A.P.
E.A. stands for Épreuve d’Artiste, French for “artist’s proof.” In English, the abbreviation A.P. is commonly used. These prints are reserved for the artist and are not included in the regular numbered edition.
Artist’s proofs are often priced 20–50% higher than prints from the regular edition because of their exclusivity and close connection to the artist. Traditionally, the number of artist’s proofs is limited to approximately 10–20% of the regular edition—for example, five proofs alongside an edition of fifty.
Some artist’s proofs feature subtle variations, such as a different ink colour or type of paper. When a proof differs significantly from the numbered edition, it may be considered a unique variant or monoprint, making it especially desirable to collectors.
